Marshall Woodside Joyce was one of New England's best known painters of the sea. Born in Medford, Massachusetts in 1912, his interest in the seas was nurtured by his sea captain father and the time they spent together on his three-master schooner. Marshall was named after his grandfather, Captain Marshall Woodside, master of the full-rigged ship the "Sintram." Marshall's painting of the "Sintram" won a gold medal in the National competition for marine artists sponsored by the Franklin Mint.

Marshall Joyce graduated from Medford High School and attended the Art Institute of Boston. His marine illustrations, based on the whaling industry and famous ships of Mystic, Connecticut, were used on calendars for many years. He maintained a studio on the banks of the Jones River at 5 River St., Kingston, MA from 1947 till his passing in 1998. In addition he taught classes throughout New England, Key West, Mobile, AL and Alaska for many years. Marhall Joyce was a member of the American Society of Marine Painters, Rockport Art Association, Boston Watercolor Society, Guild of Boston Artists, North Shore Art Association, Gloucester, MA, Braintree Art Association, Duxbury Art Association, Cape Cod Art Association, Brockton Art Association and Key West Art Association.

In addition Marshall W. Joyce is listed in Who Was Who in American Art, Davenport, Artists of the Rockport Art Association, and was featured in the American Artist's Magazine book, "20 American Landscape Painters and How They Work.".
