This vintage, hand carved wood and lucite horse brooch probably dates to the 1940s. Most of the wood horses are just the horse head; this one is rare with a full body in the act of jumping. He has black eyes, a red mouth, and clear, ruffled lucite mane. His body is a dark, walnut colored brown wood. Other sources describe these wood brooches as being created during World War II, due to a lack of traditional jewelry metals. The result was a heyday for folk art jewelry.
Measurements: This large brooch is approximately 3.5 inches wide and tall with a C-clasp, horizontal pin back.
Condition: It is in very good vintage condition. Please use the zoom feature to review all photographs carefully, as they are an important part of the description. Some photos show the wood different shades of brown - it is a warm walnut brown. My husband tells me that this horse would be called a "chestnut bay."
Marks: This is a unique unsigned beauty. Perfect for your horse lover or someone who appreciates the folk art jewelry from the WW2 era.
