In 1862, Austrian Daniel Swarovski founded the Swarovski Company and in 1892 developed a new technique for faceting glass crystals. Swarovski was a huge supplier of Austrian rhinestones and crystals to American jewelry manufacturers. Daniel Swarovski and Christian Dior (no wonder their jewelry looks so similar!) developed the iridescent Aurora Borealis stone in 1955. In 1977, the Swarovski American, Ltd. company (S.A.L. hallmark) started producing their own costume jewelry, switching to the Swan Logo from 1989 to present.
