This vintage Mandalian enamel on metal hand bag is in wonderful condition! The design is aqua blue with a yellow and teal nature motif. The bottom edges slant down to a point, with dozens of metal chains hanging from it. The frame is a heavy weight gold tone with detailed metal work also with a nature motif. The inside is unlined, metal mesh. You're good to go for a night out on the town - it is just large enough to tuck in your drivers license, credit cards, your lipstick and a few $$!
This one does NOT come with a tag, however, I have owned one that did and the tag for that one read "New Process Hand Bag; Patented Number 1539855 1546346, Registered in U.S. Patent Office; Enamel guaranteed not to chip off; Dampness or Salt Water will not effect the gloss or smoothness of this bag; Please tell your friends about the good wearing qualities of this bag; Beware of Imitations; None genuine unless Mandalian has been stamped on the frame. Originators of these enameled bags." I presume this same information applies to this bag as well!
Measurements: The bag is 6 inches from the top of the frame to the bottom of the mesh (7 inches with tassels) by 3.75 wide from the outside edges of the frame. The usable interior measurements are approximately 4.5 by 3 inches. The chain handle is 12 inches and goes from the end of one side to the opposite end and side. It is not large enough to fit my IPhone.
Condition: The purse is in very good vintage condition - it has truly earned its claim to "good wearing qualities." The painted design is intact; all of the chain tassels are there (three of them are shorter than they should be); the metal is attached securely to the frame; and the kiss closure works properly. The metal frame is in very good condition. Please use zoom feature to review all photographs carefully, as they are an important part of the description.
Marks: The inside frame of the purse is stamped "MANDALIAN MFG CO." Mandalian and Whiting & Davis mesh hand bags were patented around the same time period. Mandalian bags were of higher quality and used more floral patterns. Some bags have the look of a turkish rug, reflecting the heritage of their owner, Sahatiel Mandalian. The Mandalian bags date from 1924 through the 1930's. Schwartz's book "Vintage Purses at Their Best" has a section on Mandalian purses.
