This gorgeous 980 silver brooch is a mid century piece made by Rafael Dominguez. Dominguez was born in Taxco and befriended William Spratling when he first arrived in Taxco in the 1920's. Hougart's "Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmarks" (page 59) describes Dominguez as a "talented pupil of William Sprawling" who owned a silver and art studio called Casa Dominguez in Taxco, offering "pleasing designed in jewelry of heavy silver (Toor, 1960.) This brooch features symmetrical swirls with a silver half dome on each side. Very elegant.
Measurements: The pin is 2 by 1.25 inches (5.1 by 3.2 cm)with a horizontal clasp (although it can also be worn at other angles, as shown in the photographs. Its weight is 15 grams.
Condition: Excellent vintage. Please use the zoom feature to review all photographs carefully, as they are an important part of the description.
Marks: It is stamped in several places "RD" in a circle in two places - the mark for Rafael Dominquez; "980" (which is purer than sterling); and "TAXCO." Rafael Dominguez was born in 1911 and died in 1980.
