This vintage Toucan tropical bird brooch was first designed by Kenneth Lane for Hattie Carnegie before he went off on his own. Although it is usually unsigned, there are versions signed both by Hattie Carnegie and by Kenneth Lane, as well as versions others who copied the design. At this point, it is impossible to state with any certainty who produced this particular one.
The toucan bird is perched on a rhinestone studded branch and is facing left. His cream beak, salmon head, and turquoise feathers are made of lucite. There are more clear rhinestones cover his breast and also run along one edge of his green enamel tail. This is a famous piece that is featured in two different books: “Shamelessly: Jewelry from Kenneth Jay Lane” by Nancy Schiffer (and dates it to the 1960's) and page 94 of “Costume Jewelry Figurals” by Kathy Flood. Flood attributes her unsigned version to KJL from the 1990's.
Measurements: It is approximately 3 inches tall by 2 inches wide.
Condition: This toucan pin is in very good vintage condition. All rhinestones are present. The gold finish has faded on both the back and the front, but the back is not dark as it looks in the photo. Please use the zoom feature to review all photographs carefully, as they are an important part of the description.
Marks: This is unsigned. It is widely attributed to be either by Hattie Carnegie from the 1960's or by Kenneth J. Lane from the 1990's (he was the original designer for both versions).
