This vintage 1980's Flying Colors necklace features 5 large, bright lifesavers. The lifesavers are the primary colors of red, orange, yellow, and green,. The chain has white tube beads with small, colored ball beads in between. Flying Colors picked fun themes like this one, but I also like the subliminal message of being a "lifesaver." If you are someone in a helping profession, or know someone who is, this is the perfect necklace.
The original company, Parrot Pearls, was founded in 1975 in San Francisco. Their iconic, hand made ceramic jewelry often included fanciful shapes such as animals, flowers, as well as colorful beads. Flying Colors was spin off by former employees of Parrot Pearls in 1980 and produced most of the holiday themed jewelry. Two of Parrot Pearl's original owners, Candace Loheed and Bean Finneran, also spun off and formed Ruby Z, which produced designs until 1995. Aficionados around the globe appreciate their artistic excellence and actively collect their work. Their jewelry has received multiple, detailed references in Ann Pittman's "Inside the Jewel Box" series, Volumes 2 and 3. These unique necklaces are always eye catchers!
Measurements: The necklace is 16 inches long (40.6 cm) with a barrel clasp. The lifesavers are approximately 1.125 inches in diameter and extend about 5.5 inches across the center.
Condition: The necklace is in excellent condition. Please use the zoom feature to review all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description.
Marks: It is marked “Flying Colors” on a heart shaped bead near the clasp.
NOTE: We carry a large inventory of jewelry from all three companies. Put in any of these three company names in my shop search and all that I have in stock from all of them will show up. They tend to "fly" out the door! I recently acquired a private collection, which means I currently have a great selection.
