Original set Grand Tour plaster intaglios, 'Opere di Gibson' c.1830. The set is housed in a double sided box designed as a book with half marbled boards with gilt lettered vellum spine, speckled ‘page edge’. Inside the front and back cover is a hand written key describing the images on each of the cameos. The edge band on each is black with white hand written numbers. Each number corresponds to the contents key. Each of the intaglios depicts a work by sculpture John Gibson.
Collections such as this were collected in the early 19th century during a grand tour of Europe. The individual cameos were cast from carved stone intaglios to serve as souvenirs and collectors' items. The detail on each is stunning. These are quite fascinating to look at.
Overall condition is very good. Intaglios are bright with good detail. All are detached from the backing and are loose. They can easily be re-glued if you will not be framing the pieces. Two pieces are discolored, one has a loose edge band, one is missing. Covers show wear, staining to one side and are slightly warped. There are 15 larger scale cameos in the set ranging from about 1.75" to 3.25". The box measures approximately 6.25" x 10.25" x 2" deep.
