Beautiful antique French paperolle reliquary made in the 18th century. At its center is the corpus Christi carved of bone. Below the cross is a skull with a relic below it. Around the border in an intricate pattern of scrolling flowers, tendrils and foliage. The majority of the work is of gilded edged paper that glows warmly when light shines upon it. Some of the flowers were made with reddish paper. The background is pink/plum silk fabric. Pieces such as this one were made by nuns in convents and monasteries.
The frame is original to the piece as is the wavy hand blown glass. It's in very good condition overall with a couple of missing or loose curls. The back has been opened and resealed at some point, probably for cleaning and repair. I don't know this for sure, but it's my opinion that the backing was replaced with the current silk fabric. There is excess glue showing around the motifs applied to the background silk. This is a good size piece measuring 11.25” x 14” x 2.75” deep. The last photo is truest for color. Wonderful piece, priced with the probable backing replacement considered.
