Early Parian Type Doll Cabinet Sized All Original Body Costume Choice Quality
Lovely German parian type doll, un-tinted bisque, with sculpted blonde hair, 10-1/2 inches tall. This is a very early model, circa 1860s, with detailed painting of the facial features.
This doll has the modeling and painted facial features of the Alt, Beck & Gottschalck Porcelain Factory, Thuringia, Germany. She has very well-modeled upper eyelids as well as lower lids and facial features like those of the Empress Eugenia portrait dolls. She has shaded blue eyes, black lash lines, red lid lines, pale brows, accented eye corners and nostrils, and gently smiling mouth. Her bisque is silky and smooth and her modeling and artistry is exceptional while most dolls this small are lacking in these finer details.
Original cloth body has un-tinted bisque lower limbs and beautifully sculpted hands and fingers. As shown, the bisque arms are the early type with elbows. Her lower bisque legs have flat soled boots with red lacings. Because her undergarments are stitched to the body at the waist, I have not removed them to further inspect the body, but I can see up the legs that they are clean and undamaged; likewise with the upper cloth arms. It is very apparent to me that the costume has never been removed and any damage to the torso is unlikely. From what I can see of the body by gently searching in the costume openings, the body is extremely clean and free of damage.
Her fine organza dress is clearly original to the doll. It is trimmed in silk ribbon which shows some disintegration as expected. The neckline has an added rhinestone necklace as trim. It is stitch tacked at the shoulders and could be easily removed. It is pretty and adds to the look, but is definitely not original nor correct for the period costume. I have left it alone for the future owner to decide. The back of the dress has a few splits as shown in the photo of the back and was likely caused by careless doll stand usage. The costume is quite clean for its age as shown. It is beautifully hand stitched, as are the undergarments. I believe the lace edging on the slip and pantaloons was added more recently as it is a brighter white than original trim would be.
Condition: Excellent and undamaged.
