CHOICE, so-called Parian-Type, untinted German bisque doll, 24 inches tall, with sculpted blonde hair in a smooth hairstyle with curls on each side of the forehead and circa 1860s.
Bisque shoulder head is 6-1/2 inches, with first out of the mold sharpness including defined eyelids, philtrum, and mouth recesses. The facial painting is gentle and subdued with deep blue eyes with fully outlined irises. The nostrils and eye corners have oval accents, and the lips have a markedly darker separating line.
Her facial painting is very fine with deep blue shaded eyes, light highlights on the right side of the outlined irises, fine black lash lines, red lid lines, accented eye corners, nostrils, and slightly smiling lips. Her hair has deep comb marks and lovely curls in the back, while her forehead and temples have stippled brush accents.
Her original cloth body has leather lower arms that are in very good condition as shown. The rest of the body is cloth and both lower legs have sawdust settling below the knee joints and one or both of the legs have sawdust leaks. As shown in the photo, I have bagged the legs to contain the leaks. Typically these types of repairs are quite easy. Because the body is original, I am leaving the repair to the new owner. I have priced the doll very conservatively to account for the condition of the legs and most collectors should be able to manage this simple repair with no cost whatsoever, with just a little time invested.
She is dressed in what appears to be her original costume. It is a stunning emerald green silk gown with embroidered floral designs. It shows off her shoulders beautifully and flatters her coloring. There is much precision to the construction but the bodice is stitched together on the body. As shown, there is a split on the right shoulder. This could be carefully stitched back together with green thread to reinforce it. The bustle effect in the back is gorgeous and the length in back accommodates it with a gentle sweep. There is mild wear to the silk in places, but is in good condition overall considering the age, and as you can see displays beautifully. Underneath, she wears a two slips, pantaloons, and striped stockings.
Condition: Very Good. No chips, cracks, or repairs to the head, very nice leather arms, and damaged lower cloth legs as described above.
This doll is priced so low because the body does need repair. The gown alone would be worth several hundred dollars on it's own and the clear evidence that is is an all original doll, seriously adds to its value.
