Antique doll body with china lower legs and leather hands, 17 inches tall, circa 1870s.
Body is cloth with a mixture of fabrics that at first glance appear to be reinforcements. On closer inspection, I believe it is entirely original because the areas that are in a different fabric, are actually machine stitched together. This would not be possible if it were a repair alone. In any case, the upper torso, upper arms, and lower legs all have a similar linen like cotton. The main torso, mid arms, and upper legs are identical muslin.
The lower china legs are heavy with brown glazed boots and an incised ' 7 ' on the upper part. The left upper leg has a faint hairline that is old and measures about 3-4 inch at a diagonal angle. The leather hands have separate thumbs and finger stitching and are attached at the wrist.
Top of torso between arms measures 4 inches across and is about 2.25 inches thick front to back.
Condition is very good with a few stitched repairs and reinforcements as photographed.
Very nice antique body would make a doll about 20 inches tall + / - depending on the head.
