From dust jacket end flap: There are simple hand-made dolls of wood and rag from the civilizations of the distant past, some of them repaired and patched-up as they were passed from generation to generation. There are dolls with a range of accessories almost impossible to count, and there are the fine French dolls of china which no sensible woman would give to a child to play with and were basically made for adults. Some, called piano babies, graced the tops of pianos; some were so realistic that they must have frightened young children; and some walked and talked (after a fashion), though most of the walking dolls fell over. // It is a story of progress. As new techniques and materials were discovered the doll makers updated the traditional doll. Wood gave way to wax, papier-mache', bisque (unglazed porcelain) and china; these were followed by celluloid and plastic. The golden age had gone, and there were spin offs. Dolls' houses were originally for adults only; some could cost as much as a real house. // With more than ninety illustrations, this book is an invaluable guide to one of the fastest-growing in popularity and appeal of all antiques.
This is an invaluable reference book for collectors as well as antiques dealers.
