China head doll with head known to collectors as ' Highland Mary ', circa 1870-1880, 21 inches tall, with deeply molded bangs and overall curls. The bangs have beautiful stippling over the forehead and the modeling is extremely sharp.
The facial features include shaded blue eyes which are partially outlined and have white right side pupil accents, red lid lines, black lash lines, accented lips, eye corners and nostrils, and darker separating line between the lips with the center "v" indication. The doll was produced by the Alt, Beck, & Gottschalck Porcelain Factory. The rear shoulder plate is incised: ' 1000 # 9 '.
The cloth body appears to have been slip covered at some time in the past 50 years or so. The lower limbs are likely original to the doll. As shown in the photos, the lower legs have vertical ribbed stockings, blue garters, and black boots with tan soles.
She is dressed in a very lovely vintage gown which was clearly made for her. It is extremely flattering to her coloring and fits like a glove. The bodice or jacket is black velvet with black lace and gold metallic trim. It closes with three hidden snaps. The two tiered skirt is made of a colorful plaid taffeta. It has a draped over-skirt and pleated under skirt and is quite flattering. Underneath, she has vintage pantaloons and a pinned on padded bust.
Condition: Excellent. No chips, cracks or repairs to the china head. She has minor rubs to the high points of the hair which is less than typically seen. Body as described above.
This doll is beautifully presented in a very flattering costume.
