Dolley Madison Blonde China Head Lady doll Larger Size Beautifully Dressed
China head doll known by collectors as the Dolley Madison portrait doll, 23 inches tall, made by the Alt, Beck and Gottschalck Porcelain Factory, circa 1865.
Portrait china head with shaded blue eyes with right side highlights, darker outlining, black lash lines, red lid lines, eye corner and nostril accents, and shaded lips with darker separating line. Her cheeks are highly and uniformly blushed and there are no facial scratches or wear to the paint. She has molded blond curly hair with a molded royal blue ribbon with center front bow. Her ears are partially exposed. She has absolutely no wear to any of the paint, including the high points of the hair in the back of the head.
Note: Dolley is the correct spelling for this historic figure, though we often see it misspelled as Dolly and sometimes Dollie. Her cloth body is in excellent condition and appears to be the original. Her lower arms are china with beautifully modeled hands and fingers. It is apparent that the head has never been removed from the body, as the period twine stringing goes all the way through the body.
She is dressed in an absolutely gorgeous royal blue silk velvet two piece gown with elaborate laces and trims. There is a label on the inside of the skirt fy the maker of the costume which is likely dated circa 1940s. It is beautifully made. The skirt has a tidy mend on the inside which is reinforced with black silk and is not evident on the outside. In my opinion, the beautifully made period style gown in a color that perfectly matches her hair bow, makes this doll a completely wonderful representation. She has matching antique pantaloons, and slip underneath and a hand stitched antique chemise with hand embroidered feather stitch detailing. Her antique silk stockings and vintage blue faux suede shoes have not been removed. Included but not photographed, is a hand made hoop slip that came with the doll.
Condition: Excellent; no chips, cracks, or repairs to the beautiful head.
