c1860s china shoulder head doll with desirable gorgeous High Glaze and original cloth body with china lower limbs and blue boots, 22 inches tall.
The shoulder head alone measures 5-1/4 inches from base of plate to top of head. It is beautifully modeled, beautifully painted, and has very high gloss. Avid collectors of china head dolls know what it is like when one finds a china head with glaze that is different. The glaze has a sort of luster to it, though it is not pink tinted. The hairstyle is also UNUSUAL and different from the typical Civil War head with curls that reverse direction at the center back of the head. This hairstyle, does not change direction. All of the curls are formed to the left.
Features include blue shaded irises and right side highlights, with deep blue outlines, black lash lines, red lid lines, eye corner and nostril accents, and smiling mouth with darker separating line and signature "v" in the center which is a clue to the maker. Cheeks are beautifully blushed. The maker is identified as Alt, Beck & Gottschalck Porcelain Factory, Thuringia.
The beautiful factory body is likely original It has typical age staining. The legs have unusual reinforcements as shown in the photos, with stitched leather bands. There are no leaks. It is firmly sawdust stuffed with a defined lady figure, and is jointed at shoulders, hips, and knees. The china lower limbs are in excellent condition with very little wear. The right upper arm on the inside, has a very faint glaze crack that will not show up in photos, even enlarged and enhanced ones. It affects the glaze only and does not go into the china at all. So it can be felt, but not easily seen and is in no danger of expanding.
Her dress is clearly antique, with gathered skirt and sleeves and pin tucks above the hem. She has a navy blue ribbon sash. The dress is beautifully made from fine lawn with a woven stripe. Underneath, she has a full set of beautifully matched undergarments with delicate crocheted lace edging that is just gorgeous.
Condition: Excellent. No chips, cracks or repairs to the lovely head. Absolutely no wear to even the hair paint, no wear to the face, just a gorgeous doll in spectacular condition with just the mentioned leg repairs.
