China head doll made by the Alt, Beck & Gottschalck Porcelain Factory, faintly marked - 990 / xx - on the rear shoulder plate, 14 inches tall, circa 1890..
This is a seldom seen head from the later production of this factory. It has the definitely child like features with shorter neck, chubbier shoulder plate, and short curly hairstyle with partially exposed ears. The cheeks have the sought after high color of blush. The eyes are shaded blue, upward glancing, with black lash lines, red lid lines, red eye corner and nostril accents, and heart shaped lips. The modeling is sharp and excellent with exaggerated detail of musculature of the breast plate with arm indications.
The cloth body has been slip-covered, long ago, while the original china arms and legs remain. The arms have a very slight pink tone and right right arm has a very old crack on the back that is secure (see close ups) and the lower legs have ribbed stockings, blue painted garters, and black boots. There is minor wear to the boot paint.
Condition: Excellent. Head has no chips, cracks or repairs and extremely light wear to the hair paint in back. Sip covered body in excellent condition with only the secure old crack on one arm that is hidden under the dress.
Value based on 12th Edition Doll Values page 28 is $250.
