CHOICE quality china head lady doll, c1860-1870, 22 inches tall, with unusual and elaborate hairstyle with molded snood, molded comb at the nape of the neck, and lavish brush strokes at temples.
I attribute this china head to the C. F. Kling & Co Porcelain Factory due to the similarity in face and hairstyle to that pictured in A Pictorial Reference Guide to German Chinas by Mary Krombholz page 184, but I am open to other theories and would be interested to hear them.
The stunning head measures 6 inches tall from base of shoulder plate to top of hairstyle. She has deep blue shaded eyes with heavier blue outlines and right side highlights. She has black lash lines, red lid lines, accented eye corners and nostrils, and heart shaped lips. The molding is exquisite, especially around the molded lids, both upper and lower. The stippling details at her temples are gorgeous and define the swept back hair that stands out on the sides. The hair is center parted with rows of highly defined waves. The back of the hair shows deep comb marks under the beautifully molded snood that retains a bit of it's original gilt paint. There is a deeply molded comb at the base of the neck which holds the low cache of hair cinched at the neck and held in the snood on the shoulders. The deeply sloping shoulders have six sew holes.
The body appears to be a high quality replacement with some age of its own. I would date it to the 1930s. It is beautifully made and has high quality lower china arms and legs. The painted black boots have gilt accents and scalloped molded button closures on the sides and have tan soles. There is no apparent damage to the body whatsoever and the china limbs are excellent. Since the bodice was made on the doll, I did not remove it, but it is clear there is no damage at all.
The costume consists of a silk taffeta gown with gold silk ribbon accents and lace ruffles at the neck. It shows off her shoulders beautifully. There is some deterioration to the silk in places, but it still displays beautifully. It was likely made in the 1930s when the body was replaced. The undergarments are antique and are lace and soutache decorated. She has a plain chemise with beautifully gathered and banded wide neckline, pantaloons and half slip.
Condition: Excellent; no chips, cracks or repairs to the china head or china limbs.
The unusual hairstyle china with molded snood, molded comb and outstanding presentation is ready to display in your collection.
