China head doll with fancy rare hairstyle, 8 inches tall, circa late 1860s to early 1870s.
Extremely high quality head in outstanding undamaged condition. The hairstyle includes two flat curls on the forehead, large hair puffs on top of the head, a braided hair headband and a small chignon molded low down on the neck. The shoulder plate has no sew holes. The shoulder head is beautifully modeled and painted, especially for one so tiny. The shoulder head alone measures 2 inches high. See page 98 in A Pictorial Reference Guide for German Chinas for photos and information about this head mold.
The body is cloth with bisque lower arms and legs which are somewhat later than the head, but still antique. The clothing is sewn on so I could not inspect the entire body, but the limbs are undamaged.
The pink taffeta gown and pantaloons are stitched on the doll and I would estimate circa 1940s. There are a few moth holes here and there, but mainly hidden in the gathers.
Condition: Excellent: no chips, cracks or repairs to the china head or limbs.
Excellent little cabinet sized china with rare fancy hairstyle, all ready to display.
