CHOICE early china head lady doll with pink tinted complexion, covered wagon hairstyle, circa 1850, 16 inches tall.
The pink tinted shoulder head was hand-pressed in the mold and has a very thick shoulder plate with deeply sloping shoulders and four sew-holes. The pink tinting is even and creamy and there is no damage and no repairs to the head.
Gorgeous, extremely high quality facial painting including wonderful two-toned eyebrows with a grey outline surrounding the heavy black stroke of the brow. She has oval-shaped, blue painted irises, red lid lines, black lash lines, far-spaced upper lip peaks, and a long thin lower lip. All are trademarks of the facial painting of the A. W. Fr. Kister Porcelain Factory, Germany.
Her cotton cloth body is likely original and has had some neatly done patching as shown. I did not remove the shoes and socks and they are stitched onto the legs. She has cream lower china arms with beautifully formed hands and elbows.
She is dressed in a period dress of cotton in a tiny double pink print with brown velvet ribbon added as trim. The cress has a deeply gathered bodice and skirt, long sleeves with buttoned cuffs with lace, banded edging at the neck with lace edging, and capelet sleeve caps. Underneath she has antique period undergarments including pants, chemise, and half slip in a linen weave cotton. As can be seen in the photos, the dress has fading, but still shows beautifully for a seemingly, if not absolutely, original presentation.
Condition: Excellent; head with no chips, cracks or repairs. No wear to the face at all and only two tiny points of wear to the high points of the hair in back. She has a very tiny, barely visible nose rub and a firing glaze flaw on her right rear shoulder.
Choice example of a very fine so-called Covered Wagon hairstyle china in wonderful condition and presentation.
