CHOICE early china head lady doll with pink tinted complexion, covered wagon hairstyle, circa 1850, 15 inches tall.
The pink tinted shoulder head was hand-pressed in the mold and has a very thick shoulder plate with deeply sloping shoulders and four sew-holes. The pink tinting is even and creamy and there is no damage and no repairs to the head.
Gorgeous, extremely high quality facial painting including wonderful flat bottom eyebrows. She has oval-shaped, blue painted irises, red lid lines, black lash lines, far-spaced upper lip peaks, and a long thin lower lip. All are trademarks of the facial painting of the A. W. Fr. Kister Porcelain Factory, Germany.
Her cotton cloth body is likely original and has had some neatly done patching above the knees as shown. The cloth upper arms are a darker aged cotton than the rest of the body and I do believe the major parts have been slip-covered as tiny stitching at the hips is evident. I did not remove the chemise because it is very tight around the arms and I did not want to cause damage. As you can see, she has magnificent long tinted lower arms with elbows and these are very early and clearly original to the doll. The lower legs have fuchsia ribbon bows painted on and flat soled boots with delicate side laces. There is no damage to the china arms or legs.
She is dressed in a period appropriate dress of fine French blue silk with hand applied gold soutache braid trim. The bodice is lined in tan polished cotton. The dress is absolutely gorgeous and because the condition is so good, I believe it was made for the doll at a later time from period fabrics. There is still a good deal of age to the costume, but it was clearly not made in the 1850s. The dress has a deeply pleated front bodice and gathered skirt, long sleeves, and a banded low profile neckline to show off those beautiful shoulders. Underneath she has antique period undergarments including pants, chemise, and two half slips. As can be seen in the photos, the costume is stunning and really is appropriate although not the original presentation.
Condition: Excellent; head with no chips, cracks or repairs. Slight rub to the tip of nose but no other facial wear and extremely light wear to the hair paint in back.
Choice example of a very fine so-called Covered Wagon hairstyle china in wonderful condition and presentation.
