Sweet Cabinet Size Papier-Mache 1858 Greiner in Great Antique Outfit
Very nice antique papier-Mache doll by Ludwig Greiner of Philadelphia.
Ludwig Greiner was born in Germany. He immigrated to the United States in the 1830’s and settled in Philadelphia. There he made paper mache doll heads. His patent of March 30th in 1858 was one of the earliest US patents of dolls. The early paper labels glued to the doll heads read " GREINER’S IMPROVED PATENT HEADS Pat. March 30th ‘58". His patent called for cloth to reinforce the paper-Mache.
This is a very nice 14 1/2" cabinet size Greiner. Not often seen in the smaller size. Doll has papier-Mache head with cloth body and leather arms. She wears her original, layered antique undergarments. Pantaloons, chemise, full slip, extra wool skirt. Wears a very nice printed antique dress and she wears her original shoes. Knitted cape/shawl is newer. She also comes with her basket made from cloves, really cool!
Condition:
She is in very nice condiiton. Her papier-Mache shoulderhead is very smooth with just very fine lines, more so on back. She has nice facial paint and a chipped nose. She has been blacklighted and the nose has a tiny repaint. No other repaint. She still retains a partial piece of her Greiner paper tag. Her undergarments are in nice condition. There is staining on the skirt top skirt and a small tear on back. Her dress is in very nice condition. Her left leather arms has a minor repair on back.
She is a really beautiful, early little example of these wonderful playthings of the past. What a happy, sweet expression she has!
