I offer for sale in my shop a gorgeous crystal muffineer, sugar shaker or castor. It is my personal opinion that this shaker is in the Cameron Pattern by Edinburgh Crystal of Scotland. It measures 6 3/4" high and in great condition. The crystal is in excellent condition with no damage (it is in mint condition). The top is silverplate with a very little silverplate loss, but not noticeable. I tried to take a picture of the silver plate loss but the small area did not show on my picture. This beautiful shaker would make a wonderful addition to your collection.
A muffineer is essentially a shaker; it's a small container with a perforated top which is used to shake out powders like sugar in a controlled way. You may also hear a muffineer referred to as a castor, depending on regional dialect, and of course it is perfectly acceptable to call a muffineer a shaker, since that's what it is. The word “muffineer” started to be used in the early 1800s to describe a shaker used to hold powdered sugar which could be spread on muffins, scones, and other breakfast goods. 19th century society had a predilection for coming up with a kitchen tool for almost any occasion, and for a time, the muffineer was a distinct and specialized kitchen utensil.
