Offered today is this incredible elaborate Victorian carved Oak Grandfather clock attributed to Horner that is truly breathtaking. It has a silvered engraved dial signed “Tiffany & Co” with gilt brass applied hour numbers, sub-seconds dial, engraved gilt brass filigree corner spandrels, center moon phase dial in the arch and fancy pierce blued hands. 8-day weight driven movement has a brass covered pendulum bob and three weights, also fitted with five platinum colored tubes which are signed “Durfee”. The carved oak case has an impressive Bombay-serpentine form. The crest of the clock features large relief carved winged griffins and elaborate relief carved swirling leaves all over the frontice of the serpentine bonnet. Just below the bonnet are two other relief carved winged griffin. The upper portion of the case with fully relief carved gargoyle heads and the top of the door frame also with elaborate swirl leaf and carved figures. The oval bevel glass door reveals the five platinum colored tubes in the background which are signed “Durfee” and have three large brass weights and a heavy large brass pendulum. The lowest portion of the case with bold blown out Bombay shape has a frontice carved with full length naked puti carved in relief in the center and having carved swirled flowers and leaves on either side. All of this is supported on elaborately carved talon feet. This Tiffany signed Horner clock with Durfee tubes are pretty nearly as good as it gets for Victorian era clocks. They were renown and identified by their incredible quality, there tremendous attention to detail and their lavish carvings. Their craftsmanship, quality of wood and spectacular creativity are easily identified as sets them apart from all other furniture companies of the period. Walter Durfee was born in 1857 and owned the rights for “tubular bells”. The Tiffany Company of New York in the late 19th and early 20th century marketed some extraordinary clocks and other furnishings, but of course were best known for their phenomenal art, jewelry and glass. They were the leading art glass producer in the world at the time. They imported clock movements and their custom cases such as this Horner made example were some of the finest offered. Horner’s cabinet works were much in demand by some of the wealthiest people of the time and exceptional examples such as this clock can create a stunning presence. CONDITION: The clock runs and keeps excellent time but we sell our clocks as is and recommend that they are always serviced by a professional upon delivery and overall is in absolutely superb condition with a wonderful oak original finish. Generally speaking, the clock is excellent. There are a couple of small blemishes. On the side case midway down, is a small veneer damage which the oak veneer has a very small bubbled out spot. On the front carved bottom panel there is a small crack also. Otherwise the clock appears to be about perfect.
