We are pleased to be offering today this wonderful New England staple in the primitive antique world, a very simplistic but stylish country chest made back in the 1840s to 1850s and it is referred to as a State of Maine chest in the antique world. This one is birch and has been refinished a long time ago, likely back in the 1960s. You can still see some red paint underneath as this was likely a beautifully hand painted chest originally. When it was refinished, the original hardware bales were taken off and replaced with round wooden knobs which was common in the 1960s. It is all solid construction. It amazes me how these chests have survived for so long standing on spindle legs like this one does. The chest has the original Chippendale escutcheon covers, beaded edges on each drawer, hand cut dove tail, solid plank sides, the right side as you look at it has the typical crack which is not structural and is likely from being to close to a heat source and on the left edge of the top a small chip right on the edge. The overall size is 41 inches wide by 19 inches deep and 39 inches high. If you are looking for a country, primitive or slice of New England then this chest is definitely for you! Shipping starts at $345 if you are in our normal area. Please contact us prior to purchase to confirm that you are in our normal area as shipping can increase as much as $100 the further from New England you are.
