Fabulous circa 1850 English stoneware apothecary or tobacconist 'Virginia' tobacco jar with exceptional mottled glaze and slip decoration. These large storage jars would have been front and center in 19th century shops promoting the quality grade of fine cut tobacco being sold within.
A very substantial piece standing 10" high, measuring 10" in diameter and weighing an impressive 10 pounds! The jar is in very, very good undamaged condition. There are no chips, cracks or restorations. There are a few glaze skips, minor crazing only and the lid is missing. The interiors are very clean. The sumptuous mottled glaze, in shades of cream, amber, grey and brown, retains a wonderful lustre. The bottom is marked with an impressed mark as shown. I have also shown a photo of an old English shipping label for R. Jorgensen Antiques in Wells, Maine. I assume they were purchased in England, shipped to Jorgensen's and purchased from them.
This jar is being pictured with a second one from the same collection and also for sale in our shop. Very decorative pieces and with the addition of a new cork lid, very useful as well.
