A lovely English sterling silver wine funnel with gracefully fluted body, gadrooned edge and beautifully pierced bowl hallmarked, on both funnel and bowl, for Charles Fox II, London, 1823-1824.
The funnel measures 5 1/4" high by 3 3/8" in diameter and weighs 3.2 Troy ounces. This fine Georgian funnel is in very, very good undamaged condition. The silver has a lovely soft luster and no deep scratches or gouges. It is dated '1775' on one side of the bowl and monogrammed with the initials 'TG' on the other...perhaps a wedding anniversary gift from a wife to her husband for their 50th. The hallmarks are faint and difficult to photograph, but they are legible with a loop. The date letter is clearly the small 'h' used for 1823-24, the duty mark is facing right, the lion passant is facing left and the letters 'CF' are in an indented oval.
A desirable piece from one of the members of an important 19th century family of London silversmiths.
