A very fine circa 1800 Scottish mahogany bottle, or wine coaster of pleasing ogee-form set on original brass and leather bound castors. These wonderful table coasters are discussed on page 61 of 'Treen and Other Wooden Bygones' by Edward H. Pinto and two very similar examples are pictured in Plate 50 of the same book. It is generally believed that these rolling coasters were made by James Mein of Kelso, Scotland.
This handsome piece stands 2 1/4" high, measures 7 1/2" in diameter overall and has a 5 3/4" diameter bottle surface. It is in very, very good undamaged condition. There are no chips, cracks or restorations. The mahogany has a lovely warm, mellow patina. The cut apple-green crystal decanter shown with the coaster is also available in our shop.
