A rare and desirable circa 1820 Huntsman's figural hound's head whistle. Given its fine quality, this well-molded, hand-painted black and white pointer would have been made in one of the premiere Staffordshire potteries such as Derby or Worcester. These whistles were worn around the neck and used to call the hunting dogs. This fellow is wonderfully detailed with a red mouth, fine whiskers and painted eyes. There is a tiny hole on each side of his nose for a fine cord to be threaded through for hanging.

This delightful piece is in very, very good undamaged condition. There is expected gilt wear around the base where the whistle was blown and the underside is slightly scuffed, again, just expected wear. There are no chips, cracks or restorations. The whistle measures just under 2" in length and certainly commands my dog's attention when blown. Just a superb example of these very charming, collectible whistles!
