A fine Circa 1780 Bilston, Battersea or Staffordshire hand-painted enamel snuff box with unusual and desirable nautical scene. The intricately detailed wharf scene with sailing vessels and background mountains is vibrantly colored and the bottom of the box is a rich cobalt. The interior of the lid is decorated with a sprig of delicate blue blossoms.
This wonderful snuff box measures 2 1/4" in diameter and stands just a little over an inch high. It is in very, very good undamaged condition. There are no cracks or enamel losses and there is no restoration. There is expected wear on the bottom of the box, expected light crazing and minor roughness, or wear, on the cover just where the enamel meets the brass mount. The top closes tightly and the interior is very clean. The mounting and hinge are correct for the age and origin of the piece.
