A wonderful pair of 19th Century brass wall-mounted spill holders cleverly formed as a pair of ladies' high button boots.
The boots measure 8" high by 4 1/2" wide at the widest point. They are in very good undamaged condition. One boot has a small area of surface scratching that could easily be buffed out if desired.
Spills were tightly rolled lengths of paper or reeds used to light candles, pipes, etc. from the coals in a fire. Porcelain, metal and treen spill holders graced mantels or hung on the wall near the fireplace. This pair of brass spill holders date to the last quarter of the 19th century.
