Riab was born Boris Riabouchinsky in Moscow on November 1, 1898. He enjoyed a pleasant childhood in the comfort of middle class Moscow and frequented the most famous art schools in Moscow. The Russian Revolution of 1917 forced him and his family to leave Russia. He traveled around the world passionate about hunting and animals constantly sketching. He moved to France in 1927 frequenting hunting and artistic circles of Paris eventually settling in the Sarthe, St. Vincent du Lorouer. He lived there until his death in 1975. Riab is known to all hunters and is considered one of the best sporting scene genre painters of the twentieth century.
