1803 Durness Kirk of Session Scottish Highlands Communion Token, Scotland1803 Durness Kirk of Session Scottish Highlands Communion Token, Scotland

1803 Durness Scotland Highlands Church of Scotland Communion Token, Coin

This is an original 1803 dated Scottish Church Communion Token for Durness, or Duirinish, as pronounced by the natives, of Gaelic origin. It is a village and civil parish in the north-west Highlands of Scotland in the traditional county of Sutherland. It is 120 miles north of Inverness and has been inhabited since prehistoric times.

This square token is made of lead measures 7/8 of an inch square. The front reads DURNESS KIRK SESSION in raised lettering, and the reverse reads the date 1803.

The Kirk session was the local church court of the parish made up of the minister, land owners and business men of the parish, chosen to serve on the session. They made decisions on moral issues, criminal complaints, the poor, education, discipline, and the overall concerns of the parish, for the Church of Scotland.

Communion tokens can be found made of lead, pewter, copper and brass, and in a variety of different shapes and sizes. They were issued to church members to provide entrance to the Lord's Supper. Historically they became replaced with the use of communion cards. This one is made of a pewter or lead, it does not stick to a magnet.

The token you see is the actual token you will receive. See our other 1845 Durness Free Church token listing found on Ruby Lane, issued 42 years later than this token. We have 3 of each of these, found in Dunfermline Fife, Scotland. When gone, we will not have again.

We highly recommend book on Communion Tokens: Communion Tokens: A Guide for Collecting Scottish, Canadian & United States Tokens by Michael S. Shutty Jr, published in 2019. It is a fascinating topic!

Interesting note: John Lennon of the The Beatles has a link to Durness, including an accident he had in 1969, look it up! There are also claims that the area inspired Tolkien. This is wonderful early token. We love the history. Please sign up for our shop alerts and see our others.

Size: 7.8 of an inch square, please note size.
