American sterling silver cheese pick knife in the Antique Ivy Engraved pattern by Tiffany and Company Silversmiths, c.1870.
This early, hand engraved pattern is seldom seen today because the expense of production led to limited sales and a short production period. it took about 1 1/2 hours to engrave one side of each piece, causing the pattern to be more expensive than any of the standard patterns, even pricy patterns such as Olympian or Chrysanthemum. Based on Tiffany's simple Antique pattern, this pattern was available on special order well into the 20th Century, but still has a limited production.
This especially interesting cheese knife pick has an ornate, period script monogram: ARM and is 8 3/8" long and weighs 53 grams or 1.7 ozs. Troy.
Monogrammed as described above, the soft, warm, original finish is present, with no buffing or machine polishing.
The excellent original condition and clear detail, with no removals, repairs or alterations, make this an especially attractive offering.
