Wonderful 19th century carved bone needle case. This piece is intricately carved with windows through the case, and threaded at the top and middle. When purchased, this had a tag that stated it was ivory, however many of these were made of bone. There are some patterns of black specs on some of the parts, which are indicative of bone construction.
You see lots of needle cases, but very few like this one, 6-1/4" long. There is a chip out of the end piece, which is evident under close examination. Also, the bead at the tip appears to be another material, most likely old meerschaum. This piece is as found, and came from an estate full of precious items.
This is an great piece of antique functional artistry. Don't miss this rare piece!
