I bought this lovely hatbox in France....years ago. I love how it is an exact miniature of the hatboxes that French woman used to store their hats during the 1860 period.....even down to the green paper lining inside the box.
Made from wood that has been steamed and shaped into an oval, tiny nails were used to hold the form. The oval lid is original and fits nicely and was made in the same way. The top of the box has a type of black oilcloth applied to the lid ..just like the boxes used by ladies of this period.
Size: 7" x 5"x 3 3/8" tall
Condition: Overall very good condition with normal signs of age. One leather strap is missing. Your local shoe maker could put a new (using old leather) strap on it. The top cover has a piece of curved wood missing.
An authentic, hard to find, mid-19th c. French Fashion accessory for your favorite.
