I bought this crock 20 years ago at an antiques market when I was living in France. I have enjoyed living with it. I am moving to Mexico and am unable to take it with me.
It has so much going on! Deer, birds, hearts, geometric patterns...So exuberant!
It is artist signed and incised by hand. The writing on the bottom of the crock says " entieremente fait main" (made entirely by hand). There is the incised name of the artist V. Hingerter and the name of the French town, Betschdorf.(see photo). I would date the piece as 1890-1900.
I have never seen a piece like this from this region of France. It is artist signed because it is a masterpiece of work!
Size: 13 1/2" high and 12 1/2" from handle to handle
It is a wonderful piece to enjoy with your American stoneware as a fine example of stoneware from Alsace, France.
