Sairey Gamp - Sam Weller Mug

This made in England stein or large mug features the Dickens characters of Sam Weller and Sairey Gamp. Sam was Mr. Pickwick's companion in The Pickwick Papers. Sairey was the drunk nurse in Martin Chuzzlewit who had an imaginary friend Mrs. Harris. Sairey was noted for constantly carrying a furled black umbrella. Sairey was so popular in Victorian England that umbrellas were casually referred to as Gamps.

The mug was made by Lancaster Sandland Character Ware in Hanley England. It is made of off white ceramic and hand-painted under glaze. The stein has an embossed mold and the handle is a lamp post. On the bottom is a man in stocks with a jug of his favorite beverage sitting atop a post just out of reach.

The mug is 5" tall by 3 1/2" wide and is in superior condition. The top rim is finished in silver plate and is in very nice condition with no tarnish or losses. the rim is also marked Yeoman Plate E.P.N.S. Made in England.
