Adorable Oxy the ox is rare for two reasons: He was made so long ago and also because he was made for so few years—only from 1953 to 1957! This guy is the smallest of the three Oxy brothers and, at just under 4 inches tall, he is exactly in accord with his catalogued size of 10 centimeters. Oxy had only one article number, 1310,0, where the “10” signified his size.

Like many Steiff animals (the bison come to mind), Steiff manages a fairly accurate rendition of the way an animal looks in nature. But, at the same time, Steiff’s rendition makes an otherwise unappealing animal extremely cute!

Oxy is a good example of Steiff’s magic. Although Oxy is certainly cute, he also looks melancholy. His glass googly eyes create both aspects of Oxy’s appearance.

Oxy has some minor issues, but I would sill rate his condition as very good—not based on the meaningless “for his age,” but on an absolute comparison to other Oxys (and, because Oxy had such a short production, to other animals with the similar characteristics). If you must bring age into your assessment, you can say that Oxy is in very good condition DESPITE his age.

None of Oxy’s issues makes a big visual impact, and if you had nothing to compare him to, you would probably not be aware of them. The issue you might notice first is the mohair wear outside each of his eyes. I have put enlarged insets of these (very small) areas in each of my images showing Oxy’s sides; see my third and fourth images. There are two distinct areas near Oxy’s right eye and one near his left eye. Neither of these would be detectable when he stands so sweetly looking back at you from your vitrine.

Oxy’s snout and dewlap are made of velveteen, as is the covering of his horns. His horns are fine, but his dewlap and snout each show a touch of darkening. However, these two areas are still in fairly nice condition, and in the case of Oxy’s snout, the contrast between the once-white base color of the velveteen and its dark brown airbrushed accents is still very nice. In fact, you can even see a small remaining touch of the rose-colored airbrushing in the center of his snout—between his airbrushed nostrils. :-) Although his dewlap does not have any darker airbrushed areas, you should be able to see that it is still light (not like the awful brown color that aged velveteen often becomes).

Speaking again on the issue of fading, I hope you can see that Oxy still has strong dark brown accents on his mohair. If I did not mention this, you would have no idea that those brown accents were once darker. I know because the Oxy who lives in my vitrine is absolutely mint. If it were not for the small worn areas near this Oxy's eyes, I would have had no trouble saying that he is “excellent.”

This one last issue is subsumed under the category of “Rosalie nitpicking." :-) I am showing you the underside of Oxy’s (otherwise-tight) braided tail in my fifth image. There are two very small “pulls” int the braid located about half an inch down from the juncture of his tail and his behind.

I can’t think of anything else to tell you, but please write if you have a question. This rare sweetie is an absolute treasure, and I know you will be delighted if he comes to live with you, or with that lucky Steiff collector in your life, if Oxy is meant as a gift. Maybe he will not look so melancholy once he is on display in his new home. And you will see that his near mint big brother has joined him, so you can keep these siblings together!
