Joining her big sister in my shop is little Bessy (the smallest of the three sisters made in this general pattern). She has only her chest tag, in pristine condition, so I cannot tell you her date of birth more precisely than to say it was between 1958 and 1961. I believe she is from one of the two earliest series, with article number 1312,0, made in 1958 or with article number 1312,03, made between 1959 and 1961. I am confident of this because Bessy’s googly eyes are glass, and her collar is leather (later series would have had vinyl collars).

The “12” in either of those article numbers denoted Bessy’s height in centimeters to the top of her head, and she is not far off. She measures just over 11 cm, about 11 3/8 inches tall.

Bessy is in very good condition. I have downgraded her from “excellent” because she does seem to have been the recipient of some kisses by adoring moths. I am showing you some closeups of some of the more serious kisses: the insides of both her ears, the left side of her chin, and the area on the left side of her head between her horn and her ear. There are other areas, but most of them are small and not intrusive, and although those affected areas are not unnoticeable if you examine her closely, I believe they are more than compensated for by Bessy’s nice qualities.

Bessy’s underlying mohair is still white. I doubt it changed much from the way it looked when she left Giengen 60 or more years ago. Her orange Holstein patches don’t appear to have faded, and she has nice airbrushing on her face and legs. Her “eyebrows” make her look as if she is worried about something, but I think they are part of her charm. Her leather collar appears almost new, with only the tiniest indication of wear along the edges.

I believe one of the reasons Bessy’s chest tag is so nice is because it is not marred by tarnish from the bell that rests on it. And that is because the bell has no tarnish!

While I am discussing the things on Bessy’s chest, I want to point out that her white velveteen dewlap is almost pristine. There are barely visible light stains on its left side and nothing on the right side. Animals with white velveteen parts—think of the smaller Gussy and the smallest llama—often have darkened (to brown!) and stained (formerly white) velveteen areas. And speaking of velveteen, the backs of Bessy’s ears are velveteen, and they, too, look nearly pristine.

Of course, it’s a shame that Bessy was irresistible to a moth, but I trust all the nice things about her I just pointed out make you unable to resist her either. :-)

I can’t think of anything else to tell you, but please write if you have a question. You or her lucky recipient (if you can part with Bessy once she arrives) will be absolutely delighted with her. Don’t forget her sister; please consider keeping them together!
