I am delighted to offer you this beautiful Gorham silver overlay perfume bottle! The bottle was made in the very early years of the 20th century. I found this information while looking at a picture of Gorham’s original hand-written ledger, amazingly preserved by Brown University Library!
The glass blanks were purchased from L. Straus and Sons in 1901, and the selling price (apparently after some changes) was initialed by a Gorham employee in 1906. I don’t know how many years after that, if any, the bottle was still in production, but the work clearly started in 1901 when Gorham bought the glass. It was interesting to see that the bottle is that old, since the design has (to me, in any case) a distinctly Art Deco flavor.
The bottle is in very good condition, with just some of the really minor issues that one typically sees on antique silver overlay items, and I can dispense with them in a few sentences. There is a smattering of mineral deposits in the bottle, but except for the bottom (which, itself, is not so bad), the glass is a lot clearer than what one often sees. And it looks better in person than in my picture. You can easily see acid etched number 357, which matches the number on the flat end of the (perfect) dauber. Those numbers, which uniquely identify THIS bottle, are the same, which means they were ground specifically as mates.
The only other issue is the little nicks, dings, and scratches on the silver. Some of what you see on the silver are not blemishes; rather they are places I missed when I polished it. :-)
While this bottle is not huge, it is not puny either. You can see it in my hand in my last image, but I will also give you its dimensions. With stopper in place, the bottle is 5 inches high, and if you sit it on a ruler, it is 3 inches across at its widest. It weighs a not insubstantial 8.9 ounces.
The Gorham marks appear on the back of the bottle, on the bottom ring of silver. They are sharp and legible. The design number is D 940. To the right of that number, the tripartite Gorham hallmarks—the lion passant, anchor, and Gothic letter “G” are stamped. The lion has a little wear, but it is still discernible. You can see the marks in situ in my fifth composite image. I rotated the bottle so you could read the acid-etched number that uniquely identifies this bottle.
My remaining comments are all good. The cartouche is not engraved, which means the new owner can put his or her monogram or a significant date on it. Finally, the bottle has no chips or cracks, and the silver is all tightly adhered to the glass.
I think I have covered everything you might want to know, but please write if you have a question. This is a wonderful bottle, and it will be super addition to your collection—or the collection of someone you love.
N.B. IF YOU LOOK UP “GORHAM D 940” ON GOOGLE, THE BEST PRICE YOU WILL FIND IS A “SALE” PRICE OF $665,” AND THAT ONE HAS A MONOGRAMMED CARTOUCHE!
