Lovely set of four framed French Art Nouveau "Seasons" allegories by Elisabeth Sonrel, 1890. Elisabeth Sonrel (1874-1953) was the daughter of Niclolas Stephane Sonrel, a painter from Tours, and although her training began with him, she went on to study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Jules Lefebvre. She showed at the Salon des Artistes Francais in Paris from 1893 to 1941. In her early years she produced posters, postcards, and illustrations in the Art Nouveau style, and she is known for large watercolors in a Pre-Raphaelite manner, and was influenced significantly by Botticelli and other Renaissance painters. She was awarded the bronze medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1900 for her painting 'Le Sommeil de la Vierge' (Sleep of the Virgin).
