We recently acquired this Russian lacquer box in an oval shape and with a hinged lid featuring a troika cart with a country couple. The troika or three-horse hitch is a classic image in Russian art, most often seen pulling a sleigh through the snow. The image is enhanced by the use of silver leaf underneath the red color layer of the young woman's skirt which makes it almost glow in the light. The whole landscape is hand painted and is artist signed “Volohina” along the lower edge of the image (last photo). There is the classic gold scroll work on both the edge of the lid and along the lower border of the box's bottom which is also done totally by hand. These boxes have been made in Fedoskino as well as three other villages since the late 1700's. Each one is a tiny work of art and is highly prized by collectors around the world. The boxes themselves are made by layering lacquer over simple box forms made from wood or even types of cardstock or paperboard. Each layer must be applied by hand and then placed in a drying kiln (think the stickiest nail polish type liquid, but thinner). Boxes, undecorated, can take up to a month to make. Then they are placed with the artist who paints the scene on the top. The red lacquer interior you see in photo #5 is typical. This particular box is in good used condition with no damage. Perfect to add to or start a collection of these traditional Russian craft and artworks.
