Fresh from a Virginia estate is this Victorian period reticule or beaded purse with a drawstring closure dating to about the 1870-1890 years. It has a black fabric lining which may have been replaced. The purse measures as follows: Top of purse to bottom 7 3/4”, 5 3/4” wide with approximately 24” drawstring. The beading is beautiful and features blue and deep rose pink stylized floral pattern bands separated by green and amber beaded diamond geometric motifs. The bottom has radiating lines of green, amber beads and dark blue and deep rose stylized buds on those “stems” and a garland of gold and green beading above that. The condition of this purse is quite good considering its age with about 98% of the beads intact. There are a few very tiny losses or loose beads handing from a thread. At the very bottom of the reticule there is a group of bare dark brown thread knots and strands which may be the remains of an attached tassel (?) or just the knotting to finish the beading there. It is also possible that a button was attached to the center of the bottom of the purse which could, of course, be replaced by a new owner. The black drawstring closure section at the top of the reticule is in very good condition as is the drawstring itself. This Victorian purse could be put to good use in a variety of ways from displaying it on a dressing table to using it for re-enactments or cosplaying. It is a lovely remembrance of the late 19th century.
