From the famous Finnish pottery firm “Arabia” we offer you this 1982 Annual collectible plate from their Kalevala series. The Kalevala is work of 19th century Finnish poetry from Finnish and Karelian sources which is near and dear to Finns around the world. This plate is a scene from it with its section of the poem on the back of the plate. The piece was designed by artist Raija Vosikkinon whose signature is also on the plates reverse. The design is a charming folkloric one with trees, shrubs and a flowing river forming the background for the archer and the horseman as well as the flying bird and my favorite the tiny cobalt blue bird in the lower right hand corner of the plate. The year of its production, 1982, is in a small reserve in the center of the bottom rim. The piece measures approximately 8” square and is 3/4” tall with a curved surface rising from a simple footed base. On the reverse of the plate you will see several sections of the Kalevala poem illustrated by the plate including one in English. There is also the Arabia/Finland mark as well as a metal hanger for mounting it on a wall or in the back of a bookcase or cabinet. The plate is in excellent, used condition with no cracks, chips or other damage of any kind—in short it is ready to be displayed!
