When we first came across this extraordinary implement, it was represented as a conductor's baton.

But, we knew that it was, in fact, what Charles E. Barton (of the world-renowned silver company Reed and Barton) dubbed the "Jogging Stick".

Out for his daily run one morning, Barton was set upon by a pack of dogs. Shortly after, he invented the "jogging stick" to be carried in case a strange dog should need a tap on the nose.

These sticks were only produced for two and a half years and have since become quite collectible.

The body of the stick is made of rich, dark walnut while each end is capped with sterling silver. The tip of the baton exhibits stamped marks reading "Reed & Barton" and "Sterling".

Our favorite inscription can be found on the butt end of the silver handle; it reads "Run For Your Life".

As you can see, the stick comes in its original sienna-colored velour case. An embossed inscription on the side in gold can still be very faintly made out and says "Reed & Barton, Jogging Stick, Sterling
Silver".

There is some slight darkening on each sterling silver cap though the piece remains in fantastic condition overall.

We know that this unusual Reed & Barton collectible will be a sure conversation-starter in your collection.
