This angelic chalkware statue is beautiful in size, design, and subject. It is substantial and rendered in vibrant color and vivid detail, this extraordinary piece is one that will delight for years to come.
This angel statue came out of an old Catholic church on the east coast that was forced to close. We were able to secure a number of beautiful pieces that we will be listing over time.
Chalkware describes figurines or sculptures made from gypsum, a sulfate mineral also found in alabaster. The word gypsum means "chalk" in Greek.
The use of gypsum as an artist's medium dates from the late 18th century and saw a peak in popularity during the Great Depression.
This remarkable angel statue is portrayed in a demure pose with her feminine hands crossed piously over her heart.
You will notice that the angel wears a necklace and bracelets, each of which are colored with highly-reflective gold paint and feature vivid green and red trompe l'oeil jewels.
As you can see, the vivid, oil-based paint has been applied with care and expertise.
The drapery of the angel's sky-blue gown is accented with remarkable shading, giving the garment an exceptionally realistic quality.
It is the figure's wings are lovely. The tops of the wings almost reach the top of the angel's curly brown tresses.
You can see that she wears a golden headband.
Even the face is portrayed with a minuscule degree of detail, with remarkable shading to gives the eyes, lips, and cheeks emotive realism.
Each wing is painted in a light blue that matched the figure's draped gown, while the tips are accented with shimmering gold paint. The bottoms of each wing are a brilliant white.
Finally, the angel's bare feet stand upon a painted white cloud which in turn sits upon an octagonal golden pedestal.
You will notice that the figure shows some chipping and finish loss, including some worn areas of paint and material-loss to the face, garment and base.
However, we did not and would not attempt to repair or "touch up" these areas out of respect for the originality of the piece in its current condition.
Despite these cosmetic issues, this incredibly rare and highly-collectible piece remains in good vintage condition.
This is NOT an outdoor piece. It was made to be displayed (and revered) in an indoor setting.
