This is a really beautiful vintage .800 silver bracelet from the peak of the German Arts and Crafts Era.
Characterized by minuscule, open filigree and a distinctly hand-hewn look, this unusual bracelet is a must-have for the avid collector of unique vintage jewelry.
Germany saw a rise in hand-crafted arts and jewelry in the mid to late 1800s.
Applied arts gained greater recognition after the founding of the Vereinigte Werkstätten für Kunst im Handwerk by Karl Schmidt in 1898.
German for The United Workshops for Art in Craft, the Vereinigte was based on the Arts and Crafts Movement model of communities of craftsmen producing aesthetically charged ordinary objects.
This piece, and several others we have listed, came out of Colonel's estate who was stationed in Berlin during WWII.
His wife's jewelry was simply amazing.
She had an extremely impressive collection of German silver bracelets and we were able to acquire the prettiest pieces.
This is one of the wider bracelets and, as you can see, it has a lot of substance and bold and unique style.
The bracelet is comprised of 7 panels of incredibly delicate open-filigree.
Hand-worked strips of .800 silver form a flower shape at the center of each panel while hundreds of scrolls and swirls create a mesmerizing background.
The slightest bit of a saw tooth edge on each metal strip gives the design an even greater textural quality and dimensional look.
Each panel is connected to the neighboring one with two small loops.
The slightly curved panels are then able to articulate perfectly around the wrist.
The bracelet joins with a simple nesting box-clasp.
You will find several impressed marks on the underside of the clasp which read "800" and "Handarbeit".
The German word Handarbeit translates literally to "Hand Made".
The bracelet shows only a small amount of expected wear, particularly to the clasp.
There are one or two barely noticeable spots of verdigris on the underside but, overall, this beautiful bracelet remains in very good vintage condition.
