Reminiscent of a bygone era, this is a fantastic vintage oak thread spool cabinet that was made by the Winstead Silk Company out of Chicago. It would have been used by a merchant to display their spools of thread for their customers.
Faded golden letters reading “Potter’s Spool Silk” are a vivid reminder of the many years of history that this cabinet has seen. It comes with three drawers with glass panel facings, which charmingly display the foremost spools. A brass handle is affixed to each drawer.
Each drawer is divided into eight columns, each with thirteen rows. A display row is set in front of the other twelve rows in all three trays. This gives the cabinet a carrying capacity of 104 spools of thread.
The whole piece appears to be in original condition, and as such, the wood has a fair amount of wear. There are small flecks of white paint on the top, as well as scuffs on all sides, with a strip on the right side being the most prominent.
The pane of glass on the top drawer has a split down the middle, and the dividers for the last few rows of the middle drawer are missing. A screw holding the brass handle on the top drawer was replaced, but originally it was too long so it made a small hold in the bottom of the drawer. Overall this piece is in good vintage condition.
While still functional for storing and displaying all your spools, this cabinet would also be perfect for small jewelry or other fun knick-knacks. Whatever you store in it, this cabinet will lend it that old-timey charm.
