Rare Find Sterling Silver Georg Jensen Compact with Orig Dust Sleeve - 1940s
Easterbelle's is so pleased to present this stunning vintage Georg Jensen sterling compact. This piece is absolutely amazing and a very rare find.
It dates from the 1940s and remains in outstanding condition.
After failing at a career in ceramics as a young man, Jensen started his first small silversmithy in 1904, in Copenhagen, Denmark.
It would not be long after that his extraordinary Art Nouveau creations would attract the interest of discerning collector's the world over.
As you can see, this sensational compact features an exceptionally elegant design with a reflective, smooth exterior.
A three-dimensional stylized dolphin is applied at the center of the lid and surrounded by lovely hand-etched accents.
This is the compact's only exterior decoration.
It truly is a sensational example of the modernist simplicity of mid-century Danish silver.
Inside, a clean round mirror is attached to the underside of the lid and surrounded by a textural beaded border.
The mirror shows a small dark spot near the upper edge, but remains almost completely scratch-free.
The original powder screen remains inside the compact and can be left or removed at the buyer's discretion.
You will find a number of stamped maker's marks on the reverse of the compact near the clasp.
The first of these marks belongs to designer Harald Nielsen and reads "HN".
Nielsen is credited for creating some of Jensen's more progressive, modernist sterling jewelry and collectibles.
The "HN" is followed by a mark reading "Denmark".
Next, you will find the Jensen hallmark which includes the name "Georg Jensen" within a dotted circle. The use of this hallmark dates from the mid-1940s.
Finally, the word "Sterling" and style number "231N" are stamped on the reverse.
Of course, the piece has been professionally tested to ensure the purity of the silver.
The compact is accompanied by its original navy-blue suede dust case which is in excellent condition.
While the exterior and interior of the compact show only a few minor flea-bite scratches, it remains in outstanding vintage condition overall.
This is truly an exquisite example of Georg Jensen silver and will make a dazzling addition to your collection.
